Well, the Outlast Trials is an experimental spin-off, it's intentionally being made different from the main Outlast games, so there's a good chance the mood, gameplay, characters are all going to be much different (the gameplay in Trials is already clearly much different than the gameplay in the main Outlast games).

Also, when you say the shock is unrealistic it is way more realistic than the first games as the main characters had multiple potential for escape but didn't but in outlast trials you are taken to a facility scared hopeless so the shock is very realistic and helps with immersion, I recommend watching the red barrel's videos on making the outlast trials then maybe you would understand more of the story I respectfully disagree first of all we don't have the full story of the characters so it may have more explanation I think the opening is self-explanatory you are a homeless person you can't have a fully customizable character have backstory it takes away from the immersion Murkoff kidnaps you and takes you to the Sinyala facility I feel like the reason it feels so fast is done on purpose because in real life traumatic events always happen to fast and Gooseberry does have a really sad backstory if you watched the red barrels video on her but we do not have much when it comes to Coyle for now I also think the less we know about the characters makes it more mysterious and realistic as if you were actually put into this situation you probably wouldn't even know mother gooseberry's name.
